Our Story

Frostbeard Studio art fair

The Beginning

Frostbeard Studio started out in 2012 as a pottery studio owned by married couple Roxie, a ceramist, and Tom, a commercial animator. Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, we were struggling to find our creative niche.

Together we had 2 big goals:

  1. Become our own bosses
  2. Make a living as artists

One Kickstarter project later and we had all we needed to get creating: a wheel, a kiln, and a cool logo created by Tom and inspired by one of our biker friends. That first year, we sold mugs, plates and bowls at craft fairs, in local shops and on Etsy.

The Candles

A year later, Roxie tried her darnedest to find a library-scented candle online–but came up empty-handed. Bookish candles simply didn’t exist. And Roxie is a very skilled Internet shopper.

Despite this annoyance, Roxie would not be stopped. When she couldn't find the candles to satisfy all our nerdy, book-inspired sniffing needs, she took matters into her own hands.

Being crafty DIYers, we ordered some supplies and set out to make the bookiest candles anyone has ever smelled. Thus the first ever Frostbeard candle, Oxford Library, was poured.

And that’s how–almost by accident–we became candlemakers.

The Boom

The Frostbeard shop exploded after being featured on BuzzFeed in December of 2013. In February of 2014, we moved out of our home studio, hired an employee and found a studio space in the Arts District of Northeast Minneapolis.

Since then we’ve crafted over 50 scents of literature-inspired candles and have enjoyed every bit of it. We love books, we love candles, and it’s quite possible that all we wanted this whole time was an excuse to run around sniffing books and exploring fictional worlds all day, “researching”.

When we aren’t pouring candles or conducting this very important “research,” we’re creating art and hanging out with our pets. We also love reading at cafes, drinking way too much coffee, and getting outdoors to explore Minnesota.

The Future

Business is booming, candles are burning, and all the while we strive to stay true to our artist roots.

We still love pottery, animation and drawing and hope to share some of these crafts with you in the near future. We also love our cats, plaid, and lumberjacks–all of which serve as inspiration for us as we continue our quest of making cool things for folks to enjoy.

We’ve got some cool ideas for Frostbeard on the horizon and can’t wait to share them with you in our shop. To see our newest items, check out our Candle of the Month!

This one is for my partner who is an avid Tolkien fan.

This one, I’m excited to give it to my mum with a subscription to a letter set based on Jane Austen’s writing. The company is called Flower Letters, I believe, and I think this candle will be most complimentary for them.

I’m just excited about these candles and reading with them lit on the table beside me.

Always such a lovely treat

I love this idea. I had a little extra this month so I decided to get one to add to my order. It was a little Back to Wizard School scent. I have this in a larger size and it's delicious! A definite favorite! So nice to have the mini version for my desk!

I'm blown away. I think it's one of your best scents.

It's been awhile since I've bought a candle where it was so good I never got tired of the scent and hoped it would be around all year. This is one of them. The cinnamon isn't as sharp as expected but mild, warm. Very nice. Definitely a bakery scent, but not overwhelming. Definitely NOT plasticy-smelling or artificial. It's comforting. I'm very sensitive when it comes to odors/scents and this one has been a dream. Sometimes there are scents with a spice element that for whatever reason my eyes or skin start reacting to it. I don't get that with this candle. Very pleased and will be buying more!

I love the earthiness of this scent. I also love that the company quickly sent me a replacement along with a free smalll candle when there was a mix-up with the delivery!

I love the popcorn and cola smell of this scent. I also love that the company quickly sent me a replacement when the post office delivered the original shipment to Kansas instead of Washington state!

Perfect wintry scent

This is such an enchanting scent. All of the notes are so well balanced. It is very wintry, and mysterious. I was afraid the tobacco would be too strong but it isn’t, and adds a really nice depth to the candle.

Unexpected but delightful

I thought it would be fairly earthy, and I would describe it more as fresh, but it smells lovely. Before burning it the spices smelled really strong, but once you start burning it the scents even out really nicely. It’s definitely giving whimsy and faerie. This is my first “mild” candle from Frostbeard, and it’s exactly what I would expect for throw.

Perfect! Reminds me of Emily Wilde

Loved this candle and the book that (I think?) inspired it. Lovely woodland scent.

Absolutely the best smell that has ever existed. I am not exaggerating. It’s better than fajitas.

I was not impressed with these candles, especially for the price. The scent was almost nonexistent with some, and others did not smell at all how they were described. They do burn cleanly and evenly, which is why I gave them 2 stars and not one, but I would not spend the money to buy them again.

Don't get stuck in a snowdrift without one

Very pine-forward with sweet, tobacco-y notes in the background. A lighter scent than the other candles I've purchased from Frostbeard, and I mean that as a positive. It's also an excellent candle to have burning in the background to complement a steaming cup of black tea? I'm assuming it's something to do with tannins.

Spring candles

I love the various scents of your candles. Scents are strongly attached to memories and these bring back wonderful ones! Thanks so much!

Would buy this again

I bought this as a gift and was extremely tempted to keep it myself. Perfect fall candle and decently strong. Love it!

So-so

Once lit, I feel these lost a little of the distinct chai smell. Still enjoyable enough, but I've enjoyed other candles more.

Give it a shot!

At first, I thought this would be more of an incense-like scent, which are not always my favorite. However, it really is a pleasant more mellow background scent! Definitely one I am glad to have tried!

Another favorite

I always have to order Hafling Hills as soon as it comes out so I decided to try Faire Door and I am so glad I did. The earthy scents are comforting and the fern gives it a softer spring note.

A little sweet but nice

I like this one. As others have said it can be a little sweet smelling, so I only burn it for so long. It has a nice throw and fills a room without being overwhelming.

Smells like vanilla soap

I was optimistic given the ingredient list, but sadly the candle smells like vanilla soap rather than old books. The scent itself is pleasant, but I was hoping for more than a vanilla candle.

Great scent with unique ideas. Small for the cost though.
